Walter Goehr

Walter Goehr (1903 – 1960), was a Berlin-born composer and conductor, and a pupil of Arnold Schoenberg. He is the father of composer Alexander Goehr. He left Germany in the early 1930s, having lost his job at Berlin Radio because he was Jewish. He was offered a job with EMI, and recorded for their labels, and later for Decca, Concert Hall and others. He was one of many to record with the National Symphony Orchestra for Decca in the late 1940s.

Sadly, this record is not in ideal condition – the sound blasts quite a lot in loud passages.

The recording presented here of Franck’s D minor Symphony is credited to one “Wladimir Tergorsky.” It’s tenuous, but if you ignore the “sky” as a “standard” Russian ending, and go for the short version of the first name, you have “Wlad Tergor” which doesn’t sound that far away from Walter Goehr!
